EPI Excellence Fund

For nearly 50 years, the University of Washington Department of Epidemiology (UW Epi) has worked to confront major public health challenges. We train future leaders in the fundamentals and practice of epidemiology, to contribute to the etiology and prevention of disease, and to improve public health through exceptional research and practice.

The Epi Excellence Fund enhances student experience and fosters relationships within the UW Epi community. Gifts to this fund have far-reaching benefits by bringing people together to discuss important issues and elevating UW Epi within the field. Any gift to the Epi Excellence Fund makes these vital programs possible. Our graduate students are the foundation of our reputation and enduring impact, join us in helping them excel.

To remain competitive in recruiting the brightest students, we need your help. One of the things the Epi Excellence Fund supports is our signature Visit Days for newly admitted students. This two-day immersive experience, attracts candidates with diverse backgrounds from the United States and around the world, and helps students see themselves pursuing an advanced degree in epidemiology at the UW.

As enrolled students embark on their academic career in epidemiology at the UW, this fund is used for further orientation activities and the Epi barbeque, which help new students get acquainted with their programs, our exceptional faculty, and each other.

Other events such as Back-to-School night, hosted in collaboration with our vibrant Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee, and our annual Salmon Party, offer meaningful opportunities to establish the networks that students will carry on throughout their careers.

The Epi Excellence Fund enables us to commemorate our graduating class each year with an intimate departmental celebration for students and their friends and families (who are crucial to student success!). It also allows us to host an alumni reception at the Society for Epidemiologic Research annual meeting, connecting promising students to UW Epi alumni working across the country.

As we kick off a new decade, UW Epi is at an exciting crossroads in its story. We continue to have a growing interest across our programs. This year we welcomed our largest incoming class ever, with 94 new students. This group, together with our returning student body, represents over 220 graduate students across our masters and PhD programs. We expect to see this trend of expansion continue next year.

In 2020, we look ahead to creating a home for UW Epi in the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health—we aim to convene our entire community for panels, presentations, and public health gatherings in our new space. But we need your help!

Please consider making a contribution that is meaningful to you. Your financial support of any amount is critical to sustaining our current programming and helping us increase the number of events and activities we’re able to cultivate.

Help us achieve our vision for #EPI2020 by sharing this campaign with your networks: together.uw.edu/epi
